Photographs from Santorini, Greece

Here are some photographs of Santorini's biotopes with notes about birds. House Sparrows and Feral Doves are not mentioned here because they were common on most areas on Thira island.

Imerovigli and Skaros rock on the Caldera's edge. Few Kestrels and Common Ravens circled around the precipice. Barn Swallow was common at the willage.

The Skaros rock. Occasionally few Eleonora’s Falcon, Kestrels and a Peregrine Falcon circled around the rock. Eurasian Crag Martins were catching insects here on few evenings.

Panorama of the Caldera, seen from Skaros (Islands of Nea Kameni and Thirassia and Oia village on the background). Yellow-legged Gulls, Cory’s Shearwaters and European Shags fed with fish on the Caldera on few mornings. (panorama made with Autostich)

The lower footpath on south side of Skaros. Here we saw the Little Owl plus few Blue Rock Thrushes. Vegetation here looked quite natural and uninhabited.

Agriculuture at Imerovigli; wine plantations. This area had very few birds; some Barn Swallows flying around and Willow Warblers feeding in bushes.

Agricultural area north of Oia. Most of the hillside is cultivated and terraced in order to reduce erosion. Crested Larks were common, also Hooded Crows, Barn Swallows, Yellow Wagtails, Kestrels and two Elonora's Falcons were seen.

Panorama of the area just north of Perissa seen from the Mesa Vouno mountain. We didn't really bird here, but saw few Alpine Swifts and Hooded Crows. (panorama made with Autostich)

Panorama of Prophitis Ilias and Mesa Vouno mountains. Few Common Ravens, Barn Swallows and Peregrine Falcons, and dozens of small lizards (most of them) probably Erhard's Wall Lizards (Podarcis erhardii). (panorama made with Autostich)

Nea Kameni volcano island. One probable Barn Swallow passed by, one Painted Lady -butterfly stopped briefly. No other animals.
